During last week’s Coffee Break, I introduced S.M.A.R.T. Goals. To recap, a S.M.A.R.T. goal is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timed. Of course, this is the formula for creating the goal, but how do you go about creating your S.M.A.R.T. goals?
Start with why
Simon Sinek, a visionary genius, challenges everyone to start with why before doing anything. Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you do what you do? Why does your business exist? If you do not have a clear vision of why you are doing something, you will lose the drive and will inevitably give up on your dreams and goals. No one can tell you your why, but when you find it and hold fast to it, you can have big picture thinking.
Big Picture Thinking
Big picture thinking is simply that: having an internal image of the results you want. When you combine the why with the what, you can create something that is bigger than yourself. It is simply a matter of getting to the end result, and once you know what the end result is, you can work backwards and target your S.M.A.R.T. Goals to get you to that result.
Think of this: When you plan a vacation, you start with what you want to do and where you want to go. Next, you plan how you are going to get there, how much gas or tickets cost, how you are going to save for the trip, and how you can increase your income to save for the trip. Each of these small steps are what lead to the big vacation. The same applies to other goals you may have. When you work backwards with the big picture in mind, you can set your road map to create S.M.A.R.T. Goals that will lead you to where you want to be.
Goals have a purpose. They aren’t meant to be a one time event. With every goal you make and meet, you design your life and become a new you. They are not to be taken lightly, but are to be thought about with care. S.M.A.R.T. Goals will get you there.
